Patty DeDominic talks about Bankers, Investment Banks and Community Banks

Community Banker, Private Banker or  Investment Banker?

Who are you?

What is your next career step?   Which of these important jobs feels right for you?

Do you prefer solving the puzzles of entrepreneurial businesses?  The millions of America's small businesses have been acknowledged as an important aspect of our economic backbone and a driving force of the American economy.  Do you enjoy helping people at the community level or are you more strategic in your thinking?  Would you prefer to raise capital by underwriting or acting as the client's agent in big deals and the issuance of securities?  Which is more like you: hands on, or behind the scenes; taking deposits of thousands and lending hundreds of thousands at a time, or financing cities, universities or fire departments with multi million-dollar bonds?

There is such a huge difference in these jobs that is a wonder that they both are called bankers!

Wikipedia says "A community bank is a depository institution that is typically locally owned and operated. Community banks tend to focus on the needs of the businesses and families where the bank holds branches and offices. Lending decisions are made by people who understand the local needs of families, businesses and farmers. Employees often reside within the communities they serve.

In the United States, community banks are defined as independent banks and savings institutions
holding companies with aggregate assets less than $1 billion.[1] From 1985 to 2004 they comprised
94% of all banks in the United States, but the proportion of expanding total national deposits that
the Community Banks held declined from about 25.89% of all U.S. deposits
in 1985 to 13.55% of the U.S. deposits in 2003.[1][2][3]"

According to Wiki Pedia
Investment Banks

An investment bank is a financial institution that assists individuals, corporations and governments in
raising capital by underwriting and/or acting as the client's agent in the issuance of securities.

An investment bank may also assist companies involved in mergers and acquisitions, and provide
ancillary services such as market making, trading of derivatives, fixed income instruments,

Unlike commercial banks and retail banks, investment banks do not take deposits.

Would you like to become an Investment Banker?
An adviser who provides investment banking services in the United States must be a
licensed broker-dealer and subject to Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) and
Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) regulation.[1]  "

Mary Elizabeth Bradford, a wonderful career resource.

Dear Patty,
Often I hear, “I am not an executive - so tapping into the hidden job market won’t work for me... right?”
Fortunately that couldn’t be farther from the truth! Read Case Study #2 below to see how the hidden job market can be used to turn a dream into reality. Enjoy!
Case Study #2: Moved to the State She Wanted To Live In, Changed Industries & Secured a $7,000 Raise
Jackie lived in Michigan and had begun her career as an account executive, but she quickly realized she didn’t like it—although she DID enjoy the industry she was in, which was advertising. She didn’t have her resume professionally designed because she simply could not afford it, but she did learn how to write a short, effective value proposition letter that sold her skills in her desired position (which was to move into an executive assistant role).
She targeted several companies in the area where she wished to relocate (Dallas, Texas). Within two months, she had several interviews and one offer which was $14K more than she made previously - but she turned it down because the company was most interested in hiring her to stay in her previous role that she did not like: account management. She held out for, and received, a second offer in her position and industry of choice from a firm in Dallas, and negotiated $7K more than her previous position.
Jackie never answered a job on job boards, she targeted small and mid-size companies, connected directly with top management in each company, and conducted a personalized direct mail campaign to get exactly what she wanted. When she first emailed me this story she confessed there were times during the process that she felt unsure of herself, and admitted being nervous about connecting directly with decision makers instead of HR. However, she never let her doubts and fears stop her from completing the tasks she had committed to in order to reach her goal. In the end, she said that overall it was much easier than she ever would have imagined!
If you would like access to the tools, letter templates, phone scripts and free research resources Jackie used to make her career goals a reality, I invite you to check out my Secrets of The Hidden Job Market, Revealed online home study audio course and 79-page guidebook.
And until Nov. 15th, I am offering you a whopping 40% off of the entire course! Just use coupon code: betterjob. You can check it out here.
Inspiring your success,
Mary Elizabeth

MOSTE middle school scholars attend workshops designed to equip them with a broad base of skills. Some examples of the MOSTE workshop lessons include:
    College 101
This workshop explains the difference between community colleges, Cal States, UCs and private colleges and universities. Students also learn the A-G requirements—and get a glimpse of what it takes academically to start preparing for a college-bound curricula. Facilitators brief girls on what to expect at a college fair—and what questions they should be asking in evaluating schools.
    Time Management
This workshop emphasizes skills that are necessary for success both in school and in the workplace. Time management, prioritization, communication and problem solving are illustrated through interactive team games.
    Financial Planning
In the financial planning workshop, scholars are given a paycheck and asked to create a budget based on the amount of that paycheck that covers taxes, rent, healthcare, transportation, and other costs of living. The girls factor in credit use and the cost of credit to learn the importance of managing their debt-to-income ratio.
    Etiquette
Before attending the annual MOSTE Lanterns Luncheon, the scholars attend a workshop that focuses on dining etiquette and networking.

American Educator Inspires People Around the World

Former UCLA Professor and American Educator and Entrepreneur Dr. Ichak Kalderon Adizes continues to inspire business and academic leaders around the world.

By Patty DeDominic Santa Barbara Business Coach and Strategic Adviser

IIE Business School in Madrid Spain to Offer Adizes Training

Over the last 3 years, the number of universities offering courses on Adizes theory has increased significantly. I am privileged to have worked with Dr. Adizes while he was still at UCLA and as he established his internationally acclaimed Adizes Institute. He became a valuable resource to business educators in California and continued to grow his consulting and training organizations in Europe and other developing nations. The BA Business School in Riga, Latvia, ISM in Kaunas Lithuania, the Euromed Management school in Marseille, France, the International Academy of Business, Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Riga Technical University in Riga, Latvia, the School of Economics and Business in Sarajevo, Bosnia, the Francisco Gavidia University and the Dr. Jose Matias Delgado University both in San Salvador, El Salvador, TEC de Monterrey in Monterrey Mexico, IPM Business School in Minsk, Belarus, KMBS, KNEU and The European University all in Kiev, Ukraine, The University of Tulsa in the United States, Voronezh State University, Volgograd State University, MSI, MIRBIS, High school of economic, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, MABIU in Russia and many other Universities have all offered courses on Adizes.

About 15 years ago he and his wife Nurit became even more active in the Young President's Organization of which I am a life time member. I also got a chance to know them as we are practically neighbors here in Santa Barbara and became an adviser to his organization. I am a firm believer in his philosophies or organizational life cycles and have enjoyed sitting in on a number of international groups he has trained here at his world HQ in Santa Barbara, California.

I just received a notice that they are proud to announce that in addition to the many distinguished universities listed above, as well as the Adizes Graduate School founded by Dr. Adizes, Adizes theory will now be offered in the IE Business School in Madrid Spain. IE Business School has consistently been ranked as one of the top business universities in the world. The Executive MBA program was ranked 1st worldwide by The Economist in 2010, 4th worldwide by America Economia in 2011, and 1st in Europe by The Wall Street Journal in 2010.

"We at the Adizes Institute are excited at the prospect of exposing students at this top ranked institution to Adizes" the executive administrator Paula Lemon told me today. Adizes Institute is a worldwide consulting organization serving clients who are involved in many diverse industries, ranging in size from start-ups to members of the Global 100.

At the heart of the organization is the Institute where research, licensing and training in the Adizes Methodology is conducted. In 2011, Leadership Excellence ranked Adizes Institute among the top ten organizations for leadership development. The Institute is also associated with the Adizes Graduate School, which offers master and doctoral degree programs in organizational transformation. Dr. Ichak Kalderon Adizes, Ph.D. is the founder of Adizes and the creator of the proprietary methodology for managing change. Since 1973, Adizes has been changing the way management is taught and practiced around the world. www.adizes.com

Find Your "Yodas" and Build Your Networks

No, that's not a picture of me, Patty DeDominic, a.k.a. the Santa Barbara business mentor!  I am, however, smiling as I see this and am grateful for the folks who affectionately call me the "accidental Yoda" and their business coach.  I love working with high-achieving professionals in politics, education, law enforcement, medicine and business. Entrepreneurs are a hoot and I love them, too!

So, no, I don't think I am Yoda...and hopefully I look a little better.  But looks are not what this short post today is all about. This post is about two keys to success for people in business.

I want to share two key business pointers for those who are navigating their professional paths.

    First:

    Pick your Mentors Well
Choose Wise Mentors and Utilize their Advice

    Yes, you pick them!

Good mentors will often find you and you will notice that they take an interest in your accomplishments and offer encouragement on your trials and tribulations. Some will give you unsolicited advice and support you during critical changes in your life and career.  Otherwise, mentors can be situation specific and may or may not offer advice unless you ask them for it.

Situation-specific mentors include insiders at a company you are researching and hoping to land a job or big contract with. Others would include the wise counselor at school who encourages your extracurricular activities, internships or major in college.

Reach out and ask people for help. You are actually doing them a favor if you share a bit of your professional journey, some of your challenges, and ask for help. It feels good to help awesome people and if you are reading this far, you must be awesome or have some awesome potential!

One thing you can take to the bank is this: All successful people have mentors. Formal or informal, no one exists without the support of other people. Business and professional leaders know how to ask for help and how to give feedback to their advisers and mentors. The best pros in sports, education and even business have coaches. Get some for yourself, and get better every year at picking and upgrading your mentors and coaches.

Yes, you will outgrow many of your mentors....just be sure to pick mentors who have walked your path and (preferably) have won awards for excellence and service in your area of interest.

Don't be afraid to also give your mentors feedback. In some cases it is the best way you can repay your mentors! Your success can be truly inspiring to others and often more so to the people who have invested time in you.

    Next:

Your Network is YOUR NET WORTH Potential

Who do you associate with?  Research in major universities (www.rutgers.edu) extols the value of your network, particularly your alumni association and colleagues from all of your previous employment-- even the internships and first jobs you took right out of school.

Choose your colleagues and friends with some strategy in mind.  I'm not arguing against spontaneity and emotional support and instinct here. DeDominic philosophy encourages you to use your GUT often and combine that with logic and consciousness.   I am telling you now that I truly believe that  your Network does impact your Net Worth and YOU CAN control it more than you might think.

Some scholars and business leaders feel that they only have time for a small handful of close friends. If this is you, then make sure you add some wise mentors with lots of accomplishments to your friends circle. Make your friendships count and choose people who have values as high or higher than your own. I suggest that you look for those who have experienced higher earnings than average in their chosen field. The market pays "a fair rate"and does't sustain over-payments indefinitely. So if you want to make more money or have more control of things, one important way to do that is to up your own cash flow. You will not learn how to do that from internet strangers selling "get rich quick" schemes. You learn to increase your earnings by smart investments in time and resources and by mentors willing to help you avoid some of their mistakes.

No one in business is super successful all the time, but super achievers learn to take calculated risks and they build networks of people who they can help and who can turn around and help them.

    Here's to your success!

    Cheers,

Key Words in your Resume, by Nita Busby

    KEY WORD VALUES

Patty DeDominic says that resumes are your passport to finding your next job and to professionally representing yourself. Resumes don't make or break your career, rather they can serve as a screen
IN OR OUT tool.  Since you want your resume to speak well for you, and not be used to screen you out, it pays to provide a professionally written resume and to use key words.

Read below what expert resume writer
Nita Busby has to say about Key Words Value.

Nita Busy, Professional Resume Writer Founding President Orange County Chapter of NAWBO.org

Key words in a resume and or cover letter lead to successful hiring procedures as judged by the applicant and the corporation’s hiring authority. The documents are received by a company interested in hiring someone for a particular position. The company receives resumes by holding job fairs, by email or regular advertising job opening or through some sort of networking system. The job seeker knows he/she needs to get his/her resume, often with a cover letter, attached, to the hiring authority. Once the resume is received, these days, it is posted into a corporate PC database categorized by specific job openings. When a sufficient number of resumes have been posted in the data base, a key word search is conducted. Resumes with noted key words are printed out and used by the hiring administration to contact that job seeker for an interview. See how simple this process is these days to choose applicants?

Final tip: Research the desired places of employment and determine what key words will perhaps lead to an employment offer. Sample key words include “management” “leadership” “awards” “resolution” “profitability”.

    Success Starts in Your Head

Business Coach and Adviser to High Achievers, Patty DeDominic is proud to offer another article by strategic business and financial adviser, Alan Walsh

    Success Starts in Your Head

    Alan Walsh, CEO

Success in Your Professional Life is Much Like Success in Life - It's Largely in Your Head

I was reminded of a famous Dylan Thomas piece of prose by someone on Facebook:

‎"Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

I first saw this piece many, many moons ago - and it touched me deeply.

One could say it's been a cornerstone tenet of my life and career.

I've always treated each day as if it was my last, and sought to make the most of it.

Self-motivation is the strongest tool we have at our disposal. With it, we can overcome countless internally and externally imposed obstacles.

I could die tomorrow and say that I've had a rich and rewarding life.. but the future looks even brighter.
My head swims with thoughts on what I want to do next.

I'm like the proverbial Coyote howling at the Moon.

Care to join me in a good howl?

ACT LIKE A HOST Not Like a Guest

    Dr. Adele Scheele

wrote a best selling book a couple decades back that has been inspiring and helping high achievers for years now.    Her first book, done as a result of the PhD studies in Organizational Development and Change Management,  is called Skills For Success.

There were many tips and resources plus stories of successful leaders and even new college grads, but the one piece of advice that I have always remembered was her encouraging people to "Act like a host, NOT like a guest" if you want to get ahead in your career.

Build a Business, Not Just a Job! DeDominic & Finkel

The 2 Layers to Every Successful Business System

Are you working in your business or is your business Working You Over?

I've become associated with David Finkel and the Maui Mastermind teams and am just loving the practical common sense business training that David and his team have developed over the past 20 years!   I've seen these tactics and systems, when clients have hired McKinsey or other of the world's most prestigious business consulting firms.  Rarely have I seen the delivery and execution of common business sense done so well.

Here is an excerpt from his book    BUILD A BUSINESS, NOT A JOB by
    Stefanie Harkness and David Finkel.

Every successful business system has two layers: the process layer and
the format layer. The process layer consists of the step-by-step process or
procedure you’ve created. Does your system accurately capture the steps
of the process so that when you follow it, you consistently get the desired
The Traditional Way of Building a Business versus the Level Three Road Map 19
result? It does you no good to formalize poor processes.

You want your systems to capture your best practices and winning moves, making it easier for your company to replicate and scale those successes.

The format layer deals with how you package and present your system
to your team. Is your system easy to use? Is it transparent so team members
intuitively understand how to use it? Can it be automated so much of
the work happens via technology instead of manual work? For example,
this could be automated reporting built into your database to track sales
or monitor client orders. It could also be enterprise software that your
team uses to run the entire flow of your business, featuring key systems
built directly into the software. Or it could be simple, low-tech tools like
a script for your scheduling assistant to use when he or she leaves a message
for people, or a standardized form that your receptionist gives each
new client to fill out upon arriving for an appointment.

Done right, systems make life easier for your team and success more predictable for your business.

A Simple Test to Know If You Got Your System’s Format Correct

Having a solid process isn’t enough. You have to package that process in
ways that your team will actually use.
How do you know if your system has a good, useable format?

Ask one simple, unambiguous, incontrovertible question:

    Is your team using it?

The real test is whether your team embraces it, ignores it, or
even worse, creates a shortcut system for the task.

Your team members want to do a good job. If your business systems
are simple, intuitive, and effective, they will use them. If they’re confusing,
complicated, bloated, or cumbersome, they’ll ignore these systems
and even create their own “cheat sheet” hybrid versions instead.
But these homespun, individual hybrids normally aren’t scalable. In
fact, they usually only work for that one team member and only as long
as the volume of your business stays relatively level. Plus, even if this
private shortcut works, rarely is it ever captured in a way that the rest of
your business can use it. And when that team member goes, so does that
    know-how.

To get the format layer right, watch the way your team members use,
or don’t use, your systems. Don’t argue, don’t preach, don’t cajole—
simply observe. Take their behavior as critical feedback to refine and
improve your systems. Remember, they’re meant to leverage, empower,
and simplify the lives of your employees, so don’t fall in love
with any specific system. Rather, fall in love with the result it’s intended
    to generate.
